Welcome to my Weightloss Journey: a New Day 1

So you wake up one morning and you look in the mirror but you don’t see the same person looking back at you. This is how I felt when my thyroid decided to go on strike. Your hair is thinner and coming out in chunks. You are sluggish no matter how much sleep you get, or caffeine you drink. Then your weight… Ugh, that pesky thing everyone hates, gaining weight even when your habits don’t change. This is life with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

What is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? Well, it is also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is an autoimmune disorder involving chronic inflammation of the thyroid (*American Thyroid Association).

When I first tried to lose weight after my diagnosis, it was a struggle. I was tracking my eating but weight kept piling on. I was working out but sometimes I was too tired to do anything more than the elliptical. Either way I should be losing some weight but the number on the scale kept going up. My clothes were getting tighter to the point I had to get bigger pants.

How was I supposed to lose weight when the normal means didn’t work? Well, I needed help.

So my endocrinologist put me on a metabolic therapy and it worked until it didn’t. My doctor said that my body can adapt to the metabolic therapy and I think that, along with the grief I felt after my brother’s passing, caused everything to change for me physically.

Now 5 years later, I’m off the metabolic therapy, off my thyroid medication and trying to start again. I removed all prescriptions from my regime because I was tired of the inconsistency of my prescription and the constant stabbing from getting my blood drawn. So, I wanted to start over and do it holistically.

So, here I am today… 5 feet 0 inches, weighing 153 pounds. I want to get back to feeling better in my skin and maybe one day fit into my “skinny” jeans again. I am seeking help from a qualified nutritional coach, Heather Delveaux and with her help I hope to reach my goals.

Welcome to my new Day 1. I’m bringing you along on this very challenging journey and hope you learn something along the way. I also want you to know you are not alone, if you have Hashimoto’s, if you’ve struggled to lose weight or just aren’t feeling comfortable in your skin.

Over the next 6 weeks, I’m going to share a series of posts with you about the lifestyle changes I’ve made, and will continue to make, as I work towards my goals. I’ll share with you the support I’m getting, from paid professionals to fitness communities, the products I’m using, the reality of the ups and downs of the journey, and much more.

I’d love to hear from you… what have you struggled with most when it comes to weight loss or feeling comfortable in your own skin? What questions do you have for me about my journey? Anything you’re hoping I share more of?

Until next time, have a joy filled day.
